National launching of the ROGEAP project in Cabo Verde

Stakeholders from the public and private sectors, including civil society organizations, professional associations, the media, NGOs and commercial banks in Cabo Verde, were briefed on the implementation mechanism of the Regional Off-Grid Electricity Access Project (ROGEAP). The workshop was held on December 18, 2023 in the city of Praia, and was attended by representatives of the ECOWAS Commission, the ECOWAS Center for Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency (ECREEE) and the Ministry of Industry, Commerce and Energy of Cabo Verde (MICE).

During the workshop, participants were given a presentation on the implementation mechanism of the ROGEAP project in the 19 Member States involved in this initiative, namely the 15 ECOWAS countries and 4 others from sub-Saharan Africa: Central African Republic, Cameroon, Chad and Mauritania. The workshop also provided an opportunity to raise awareness of off-grid solar photovoltaic technologies, with a view to facilitating the establishment of a regulatory framework conducive to the development of the off-grid solar photovoltaic market in Cabo Verde.

ROGEAP is being implemented by the ECOWAS Commission and ECREEE for component 1 (development of a regional market) and by the West African Development Bank (BOAD) for component 2 (access to finance). The aim of the project is to increase access to sustainable electricity services in the countries mentioned, for families, commercial businesses and community public health and education infrastructures, using solar systems. The project, worth 338.7 million dollars, is financed by the World Bank, the Clean Technology Fund (CTF) and Dutch Cooperation (DGIS).
